1.How many names does LiPo battery have?
There are many names called by different people, as far as we know, LiPo is shortest and most popular one among them. besides, lithium polymer battery,Li-Polymer,LiPoly,Li-ion Polymer, lithium ion polymer,Polymer battery,li-pol, polymer lithium battery all are the same battery, that is LiPo battery.
2.How many types LiPo battery are there?
According to LiPo battery manufacturer Padre Electronics team, the range covers: standard type, high voltage 3.8V LiPo,high/low temperature battery, high rate discharge LiPo,special shape LiPo batteries, Lithium cobalt type, LiFePO4 type, NCM type, Lithium Mangnese type, Primary mangnese 3.0v type, For more details, please read What are the features of different type LiPo batteries?
3. What’s the difference between LiPo battery and Normal Li-ion battery?
The main differences are two: First one is package form, LiPo battery uses soft aluminum foil firm while Li-ion battery uses steel or aluminum metal case outside; The second one is that they use different electrolytes, LiPo uses solid one while Li ion battery uses liquid electrolyte, the solid electrolyte and the soft package greatly improved the battery safety performance.
4.What is the LiPo battery made of?
A LiPo battery cell includes positive tab, positive sheets, negative tab, negative sheet, electrolyte, aluminum foil package. If it’s a battery pack, there will be other parts like NTC,cables, connector, protection circuit board included after assembly.
5.What is nominal voltage for rechargeable lithium ion battery?
Nominal voltage is an average mid value for compared to the whole range of the lithium ion battery, it’s the most stable voltage during whole working time, occupies 70%~85% of the battery work time. For example, Lithium polymer battery is 4.2V after full recharging, it will drop to around 3.7V soon after beginning discharge, then keep discharging with nominal voltage till it’s capacity runs out mostly, then the voltage drops to lower and lower, finally cut off at 3.0V or 2.5~2.75v.
6.What’s charging cut off voltage for lithium ion battery?
Charging cut off voltage is the up limit of the battery voltage, because it’s not allowed to overcharge lithium ion battery, so a safe voltage limit is set by protection circuit board. When a 3.7v battery voltage is charged to reach 4.25V, the PCM over charging protection function will be activated, then the charging will be stopped.
7.What’s the discharging cut off voltage?
Discharging cut off voltage is a safe down limit for lithium ion batteries, so it’s not recommended to discharge the battery to lower voltage than this, otherwise the battery will be damaged. For example, for a 3.7v LiPo battery, its discharge cut off voltage is always set to be 3.0V or 2.75V, 3.0V is used mostly by Japan control IC, 2.75V is always used by Taiwan IC. Both of these IC will protect the battery from over-discharging.
8.What’s the battery capacity?
Capacity is a rated power value with unit Ampe hour/Ah, it’ means the result of the battery discharging at a certain current till end. For example, If a battery discharge at 200mA current, 5 hours later, it runs out of power and stops discharging, then we can say the capacity of this battery is 200 mAh*5 hours=1000 mAh.
9. How to charge the lithium polymer battery?
As a rechargeable lithium ion battery, It should be charged with CC/CV mode. First, charge with constant current till the battery voltage rises up to 4.2V, then keep 4.2V charging till the charge current drops to a small value, around 1%~3%, then the charging should be stopped. For more info about battery charging, please go to What charger should we use to charge LiPo battery?
10. What’s the battery inner resistance?
It’s the resistance when the current goes through the whole battery. There are many other objects between positive and negative, and they are not superconductor, so,there will be resistance. For a battery, the smaller the inner resistance is, the better performance the battery will have.
11.Why engineers like LiPo battery for they projects?
Compared to other lithium ion batteries, LiPo battery has great advantadges on safety, energy density and shape flexibility. It can much lighter and has 20% higher capacity compared to normal li-ion batteries, what’s more, battery engineers can design the LiPo to be different shapes according to customer needs. For example, curving shape, ultra thin shape, button shape, ultra narrow shape, micro tiny shape, cylindrical shape and so on. This feature enables smart device designers great space to create more new wonderful products freely.
